What is ASP.NET Session?

A session is defined as the period of time a unique user interacts with a particular web application.

HTTP is a stateless protocol, in the sense that a Web server is concerned only with the current HTTP request for any given Web page. The server retains no knowledge of previous requests.

The stateless nature of HTTP requests presents unique challenges when writing Web applications.

ASP and ASP.NET applications maintain a user’s session using a feature called session state.

In this series we are going to talk in detail about how to troubleshoot ASP.NET session state related issues.

Scientists at the Stanford University, USA, have the reported that they have successfully turned a specific type of paper (coated with ink made of silver and carbon Nano materials) into a “paper battery”. This recent development holds promise for a new kind of lightweight, high-performance energy storage.

There is a specific feature which helps ink stick to the surface of a paper. The same feature also allows it to hold on to the single-walled carbon nanotubes and silver nanowire films. Earlier research had found that silicon nanowires could be used to make batteries 10 times as powerful as lithium-ion- batteries, which are currently used to power devices such as laptops.

Taking advantage of the mature paper technology, low-cost and high-performance energy storage are realized by using conductive paper as current collectors and electrodes. This type of battery could be useful in powering electric or hybrid vehicles.   It may be mentioned here that battery weight and life have been an obstacle to commercial viability of electric-powered cars and trucks. It may be also play a big role in making electrical appliances lightweight and long-lasting, and may even lead someday to paper battery is that in addition to being useful for portable electronics and wearable electronics, the paper supercapitators  can also be used for all kinds of applications that require instant high power.

As per a report released in mid-January 2010, it will soon be possible to answer a call on the mobile phone without touching a button. Such mobile phones, equipped with the revolutionary breath- controlled technology, will soon be available in the market. The breath- controlled technology is called Sensawaft. It has been developed by Zyxio, a US firm. The new technology will be used by as wide a range of gadgets as possible, including in aids for disabled people, as well as in hands-free mobile phones.

Sensawaft  is powered by micro-electromechanical system, tiny chips that can be embedded in other devices, such as a video game or hands-free mobile phone headset. The possibilities of this technology are endless. It even has potential for the military and factory workers, who need to use both their hands continually. Another added functionality would surely be of much for such people.

Windows dominates Linux in servers, not just the desktop

Some Linux fans will have you believe that even though Windows dominates the desktop, Linux is closing in on Microsoft in the server market. New research from IDC shows that it’s not so: Windows beats Linux when it comes to servers by well over a three-to-one margin, as it has for at least a year.

IDC recently issued a report about worldwide server use, which primarily focused on server hardware, with IBM in the lead, followed by HP, Dell, Sun, and Fujitsu.

Just as interesting are the figures for market share by operating system. The research shows that Windows Server had a 73.9% market share for the fourth quarter of 2009, with Linux at 21.2%. Those numbers are precisely the same — down to the tenth of a percentage point — as they were a year previous.

When it comes to revenue, Windows cleans up as well, with nearly $5.4 billion in revenue for the quarter, compared to a little over $1.9 billion in revenue for Linux.

The upshot? Windows doesn’t just dominate the desktop, but the server market as well, and shows no signs of slowing up.

Microsoft confirms free Office 2010 upgrade deal

Microsoft’s chief financial officer confirmed today that the company will offer a free upgrade to the upcoming Office 2010 suite starting this month. In a presentation at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Microsoft CFO Peter Klein said that the Office 2010 Technology Guarantee program would kick off before the end of March.

Last month, details of the free Office 2010 upgrade program leaked to the Web when a Microsoft technology specialist posted information to the firm’s partner community site. The site said that Microsoft would launch the Office 2010 upgrade deal on March 5 and run the program through Sept. 30.

According to the leaked information, customers who purchase an eligible copy of Office 2007 during that period will be allowed to download a corresponding edition of Office 2010 for free when the new suite launches in June. Users who want a DVD installation disc will have to pay a small shipping-and-handling fee.

Buyers of Office Home and Student 2007 will receive a free copy of Office Home and Student 2010, while buyers of Office Standard 2007 will be eligible for a free copy of Office Home and Business 2010, a new addition to the Office lineup. Purchases of either Office Small Business 2007 or Office Professional 2007 will be eligible for a free copy of Office Professional 2010.

Free upgrade programs are nothing new for Microsoft. Last summer, Microsoft used the Windows 7 Upgrade Option to maintain sales of Vista, giving customers who bought a copy of the soon-to-be-replaced Vista between June 26 and Oct. 22 free copies of Windows 7 when it launched. The company also offered similar deals prior to releasing Office 2007 and Office 2008 for Mac. Office 2010 is set to ship in June, and will be the first of its suite line to forego less-expensive upgrade editions.

Microsoft to plug Xing social networking into Outlook

Microsoft will install a plug-in for its Outlook 2010 e-mail application for Xing, a large professional networking site dominant in Germany. The plug-in will allow Outlook users to see messages, status updates and other information via Outlook without the need to use a Web browser. It effectively makes Outlook a front end for interacting with Xing, as a person’s colleagues can be directly contacted through the application. Microsoft said that helps users save time.

The Xing plug-in is part of Microsoft’s Outlook Social Connector, which is a set of features that allow for close integration with social-networking sites. Microsoft already has an agreement with LinkedIn.

Through the plug-in, users can see photographs of people they have contacts with. Outlook also synchronizes contacts from each social network with its own address book and users’ mobile phones.

Xing says it has about 8 million users in 200 countries. Users can create a free account, and Xing also runs paid services such as job advertisements, recruiting and other kinds of advertising.

The Xing plug-in will be available when Microsoft releases Outlook 2010, expected in June.

Symbian 3 announced

More news from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona – The Symbian Foundation has today unveiled the Symbian^3 (S^3) platform.

S^3 is the first entirely open source release following the platform’s transition to an open source license earlier this month. Here’s a brief tour of what’s new:

  • * HDMI support enables users to plug their phone into a TV and watch a high-definition movie at 1080p quality without a Blu-ray player.
    * Music store integration embedded within the radio enables users to identify a song and learn more about it. The addition of a “buy now” button, which links with the           user’s chosen music store, makes purchasing easy.
    * More efficient memory management due to Writeable Data Paging allows more applications to run in parallel for a faster, more complete and efficient multi-tasking experience, especially on mid-range hardware.
    * A new 2D and 3D graphics architecture takes full advantage of the hardware acceleration available to deliver a faster and more responsive user interface. Users, developers and device creators will all benefit greatly from the visual enhancements and smooth transitions that will significantly improve the look-and-feel of their applications and services. Combined with industry-standard OpenGL ES, the new architecture also provides a great platform for high performance games – all without slowing the phone down.
    * The industry-leading networking architecture, ready for 4G networks, provides next-generation Internet experiences on today’s devices. Consumers will benefit from the architecture’s ability to seamlessly balance each individual application’s needs regarding factors such as bandwidth, latency and jitter. This improves the consumer’s experience of network-dependent applications and Internet services like VoIP and media content streaming.
    * One-click connectivity for all applications greatly simplifies the process of connecting to the Internet, without interrupting the user. New global settings allow the user to configure platform-wide behaviour, for example ensuring the device automatically switches from cellular to WLAN when a free WLAN network is available.
    * Usability enhancements across the user interface include the adoption of a direct “single tap” interaction model, making it much easier to complete common tasks on a device. Multi-touch support for gestures such as “pinch-to-zoom” forms the basis of a gesture framework that can be extended and leveraged by the developer community.
    * The Homescreen takes a big step forward with support for multiple pages of widgets and a simple flick gesture to move between them. The widget manager makes discovery and download of new widgets simple and support for multiple instances of a native widget means that consumers can monitor multiple weather forecasts, news feeds, social networking accounts or multiple email accounts simultaneously through a common interface.

S^3 is expected to be “feature complete” by the end of Q1.Lee M. Williams, Executive Director of the Symbian Foundation, said: “S^3 is another huge milestone in the evolution of our platform. Now that it is fully open source, the door is open to individual contributors, device creators and third-party developer companies, as well as other organizations, to create more compelling products and services than ever before. We have enjoyed significant momentum since we completed S^2, with companies including Sun, Nokia, Ixonos, Comarch and Accenture, among others, contributing to S^3. We are now looking to build on this momentum and remain on course to complete S^4 later this year.
